OpenAI's Smart Speaker Wants to Seem "Alive". Here's Why That's a Bad Sign

I keep coming back to the idea that hardware is OpenAI's escape hatch from profitability. The company lost billions last year and is building a $300 to $400 smart speaker. The device has moving parts. It lights up. It's designed by Jony Ive's studio to seem "more alive".

I genuinely don't know how to feel about this one.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported the details this week. The speaker will be doughnut-shaped, roughly the size of a hockey puck. It has a Qualcomm chip, a 12MP Sony camera, an IMU, MEMS microphones, and a kinetic actuator that moves parts independently when the device responds to prompts Source.

The moving parts aren't a gimmick. They're the whole point.

OpenAI's pitch seems to be that ChatGPT needs a body. You can already talk to it on your phone, but apparently that's not enough. The smart speaker aims to sit on your desk and interact with you like a companion. It will control smart home devices. It will use "more advanced models for humanlike interactivity" than the voice mode on mobile apps.

What's striking is the anxiety behind the design. A stationary speaker is just a speaker. Add lights, add movement, add the illusion of life, and suddenly you've got a product people might pay $300 for.

This is what happens when a company can't figure out how to monetize its software. You build a physical object and hope the hardware margins save you. The smart speaker market has been brutal. Amazon's Echo line cost the company $25 billion over four years without ever reaching profitability Source. Alexa+ has fewer than a million subscribers, compared to ChatGPT's billion monthly active users Source.

I'm reminded of the Even Realities work in camera-less smart glasses. That company bet that productivity beats surveillance. OpenAI is betting the opposite. Its speaker needs to watch you, track your movements with a 12MP camera, and then pretend it cares.

The device will launch in 2027, assuming Apple's lawsuit doesn't slow it down. OpenAI launched an internal probe after Apple accused it of stealing trade secrets for hardware development. Bloomberg says OpenAI concluded the speaker doesn't use Apple IP.

The real story here is the pivot from software to hardware. OpenAI has released one other gadget so far, the $230 Codex Micro mini keyboard. The pattern is clear. The company can't scale on subscriptions alone, so it's building objects to sell.

I wonder if anyone at OpenAI is thinking about what it means to put a moving, watching device in someone's home. The privacy implications are obvious, but the cultural ones are stranger. We're getting used to AI that looks at us and moves like it's alive. That's not an incremental change. It's a shift in how we relate to machines.

The question isn't whether OpenAI can build a smart speaker. The question is whether anyone will buy one, and what we're agreeing to when we do.
