AI Chip Shortage Is Making Smartphones More Expensive in India
The AI boom has a side effect nobody expected: your next phone costs more.
India's smartphone market just saw its worst quarter in six years. Shipments dropped 10% year-over-year in Q2 2026, according to market research firm Counterpoint. That sounds like a demand problem. It isn't. It's a supply problem caused by AI itself.
Here's what's happening. Companies like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are shifting production toward High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) — the kind of chips AI servers gobble up. HBM generates higher margins than the RAM and storage chips that go into phones. So manufacturers allocate more fab capacity to AI chips, less to smartphone memory. Simple economics.
The result? Smartphone makers in India are paying more for RAM and storage, and those costs get passed to consumers. India's market is especially vulnerable because a huge share of buyers shop for devices under ₹20,000 (roughly $240 USD). Even small component price bumps tip people out of the market.
Phones under ₹15,000 saw the sharpest shipment declines. The average replacement cycle could stretch from 3.5 years to nearly 4 years. People hold onto their phones longer because buying new just got harder to justify.
Premium brands are more resilient. Samsung grew shipments while Apple dipped slightly — though analysts note Apple's drop was more supply-constrained than demand-driven. Premium buyers have financing options that absorb the price bump. Budget buyers don't.
This is the first time I've seen AI's growth directly affect everyday consumer electronics pricing outside of GPUs. AI isn't just reshaping data centers and enterprise tech anymore — it's changing the cost structure of the devices billions of people carry every single day.
Memory shortages are expected to last through 2027. Prices may stabilize, but they're unlikely to return to previous levels unless memory production expands significantly. The AI-driven demand shift isn't a blip. It's a new baseline.
I keep coming back to this angle: the same chips powering the AI revolution are making the hardware that connects us all more expensive. There's a tension there worth watching.
